Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior official stated the incident rendered him stunned and needed to be solved quickly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
